The Belgian season started off today with the 1st race in the Brico Cross. On a new race location in Eeklo, the riders were served with dry and fast conditions. A few steep climbs and a sand stroke made it quite a though race though.
Laurens Sweeck took the holeshot and lead the race in the first lap. Van Aert and Van Der Poel both started well too, following closely behind Sweeck. Also in their tale, Vanthourenhout, Van Kessel and Adams. Pauwels and Vermeersch are moving up.
The barriers played an important role in the race today. They were located on a fast section of the course. Not jumping meant losing meters. Van Der Poel immediately took advantage. He accelerated, jumped the barriers and created a gap. Vanthourenhout is in 2nd position but Van Aert quickly moves up to take lead in the chase.
Van Aert puts the pressure on Van Der Poel for about 2 laps but he does not manage to close the gap. Vanthourenhout and Sweeck return to his tale. Later also Pauwels and Vermeersch make the return to the chasing group.
Van Der Poel in clearly too strong for the rest today and takes the win. The battle is for the 2 remainig places on the podium. Towards the last lap, Van Aert looses a few seconds on Vanthourenhout and Sweeck. A big effort is needed. He overtakes Sweeck and thanks to a great passage in the sand stroke, he also manages to counter attack Vanthourenhout in the final lane.
